Can I Toss My Braces into the Washing Machine? 5 Maintenance Tips to Extend the Life of Your Gear
Many people toss their sweat-soaked braces directly into the washing machine after exercise or manual labor—but this is actually the #1 killer of a brace's lifespan! As functional products, improper cleaning can lead to loss of elasticity, deformed support stays, or weakened Velcro straps.
As a professional manufacturer, we’ve compiled these 5 essential maintenance tips to keep your gear in top shape:
1. Prioritize Hand Washing Over Machine Washing
Braces are typically made from a blend of materials like spandex, latex, and nylon. The heavy agitation and twisting cycles of a washing machine can easily snap these delicate elastic fibers.
Our Advice: Use plain water or a neutral detergent. Gently press and wash by hand in a basin.
2. Fasten All Velcro Straps to Avoid Fabric Snagging
This is the most overlooked step. If the hook side of the Velcro is exposed, it acts like a "tiny fishhook" during washing, snagging the knit fabric of the brace or other clothing items.
Our Advice: Before washing, ensure all Velcro straps are neatly aligned and fastened.
3. Strictly Prohibit Fabric Softeners
Fabric softeners work by coating the fibers. This film clogs the pores of functional fabrics, causing the brace to lose its moisture-wicking properties and potentially causing skin irritation.
Our Advice: A neutral detergent (such as delicate wash or mild soapy water) is all you need.
4. Remove Hard Support Stays
If your brace contains removable steel plates or plastic stays, please take them out before cleaning.
The Reason: Stays can puncture the outer layer of the brace during a wash cycle or become permanently bent, compromising the protective function.
5. Air Dry: Avoid Dryers and Direct Sunlight
High heat is the ultimate enemy of elastic fibers. Dryers or direct sunlight can cause rubber components to age, become brittle, and lose their stretch.
Our Advice: After washing, press the brace with a dry towel to absorb excess water, then lay it flat in a cool, ventilated place to air dry.
A Note from the Manufacturer: While braces are eventually consumables, proper care can significantly extend their "service life." When you notice your brace feels noticeably loose or the Velcro no longer stays fastened, it’s a sign from your gear that it’s time for a replacement to ensure your safety and support remain uncompromised!
